How have some of you or your spouses reacted when this has happened? I'm really not out in public a lot while I'm pregnant (mostly because of restrictions for how much I can be on my feet, but partly because I just don't go out too much in general), so maybe this situation would be more common if I was.

Double Tap
I had my first non-family member belly rub today at church. It was more like a double tap then a rub which was a good thing :-) Thankfully it was from a good friend and I could tell she was just so sincere in wanting to touch my belly. (haha- that sentence just sounds funny.) I admit I still felt a little invaded but there was no way I could be mad or say something afterward to let her know. She is really a sweet person and I think, at the moment, was just a little aloof to social boundaries ;-) She's been my friend for a couple of years and because I was MIA with the twins, and we've normally had big coats on the past few times we've seen each other, this was the first time she's really seen my pregnant belly.

We have babies!
I realize this is a little late now that it has been almost four weeks since having the babes, but I don't think anyone can really blame me :-) I'm definitely not on bed rest anymore!

The morning of the 7th we headed over to Logan Regional Hospital for my scheduled c-section at about 6:50am. My sister Karinne was able to be with us in the operating room too which was great since they normally let only one other person (usually the spouse) in the room. There was a chance that the anesthesiologist would veto having the extra person but thankfully he was ok with having her there and she didn't wake up early for nothing!

They weren't going to start until 9am so in the meantime they put in an IV, a catheter, and hooked me up to the fetal and maternal monitors. In the meantime Keegan and K-poo got all prepped as well with scrubs, booties, masks, and hats. Then after that was all done we watched videos of c-sections being performed online with Keegans laptop and just chatted together. :-)
A little after 9 we all walked into the operating room and the fun began. The spinal block wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world but it wasn't too bad. I was glad the needle was smaller than an epidural needle! It started working almost as soon as it was in and I barely had time to lay down. First the doctor took out the cerclage and then the other cutting began! I was glad the screen was up because while the doc was taking out the cerclage I saw the instrument he was using to do it with blood on it and it wasn't pretty! yuck. It was fun to just watch the facial expressions of Keegan and Karinne and have them ask questions like, "You really cant feel that?!" And have them be amazed that I really couldn't. The one thing I really did feel was when they took Miriam out... it was such a relief of pressure!!! It felt so good!
In no time at all they had cleaned her up, swaddled her and put a little cap on, and put her on my chest. It was amazing how fast it all happened. Our reaction to Miriam at first was a lot like everyones... we couldn't get over how BLONDE her hair was! She cried when she came out and was being cleaned off but once she was swaddled she didn't cry at all. She was just so cute, sweet and little :-) She weighed 6lbs 6oz and was 18 inches long.

Then it was little Rowans turn. I was expecting to feel the same release of pressure but I didn't. I just heard him cry and that was such a good sound. He kept crying in more of a whimper and three 1/2 weeks later not too much has changed with the two of them in regards to how much they cry. Miriam is more relaxed and Rowan whines :-) Rowan likes to see what is going on and doesn't like to sleep as much. He'd rather stay awake with mom & dad. He can be a little stinker sometimes and is the more needy child but he is just so cute!! He weighed in at 6lbs 4oz and was also 18 inches long. We were glad that somehow I packed nearly 13 lbs of pure baby in there!

The babies had lots of family anxious to meet them waiting at the hospital. Probably most anxious of all were Keegan's parents who had made the long drive from Portland for the 3 day weekend. They both had to work on Tuesday and had the drive ahead of them, but they had to stay so Grandma could at least hold one of her new grand babies! Then they got in the car and headed home... so sad!!

As the anesthesia wore off I got really nauseous and threw up about four times before the anti-nausea meds kicked in. That was probably the worst of all of it. I felt pretty weak after losing so much blood and my hematocrit levels were pretty low so I had to keep the IV in until it started improving. Thankfully all of that was pretty short lived and even the next day I felt a lot better. I've recovered really fast from the surgery and it's a good thing too!
We stayed in the hospital getting virtually no sleep in between feedings and checking vitals for three nights and came home Thursday around 6pm. It was pretty surreal taking them home but it felt good. And it felt good to take all of the wrist bands off! They kept scratching the babies legs! There's still the aspect of getting virtually no sleep, but it is slowly getting a little better. They are A LOT of hard work, but we are having a lot of fun too. It was SO nice to have my mom here for about 5 days. She and my sisters helped out a lot and made sure we all survived. It was hard to see her go but we kept surviving somehow. :-)

The babes are both doing well and getting bigger and bigger. We still struggle finding clothes we have that aren't huge on them though. But in no time at all they'll be huge! Every time I see another baby I think it's MASSIVE in comparison- so I'm trying to enjoy mine while they are so tiny.

They're Here!
Miriam LaRae Garrity was born September 7th at 9:28 AM weighing 6 lbs, 6 oz. She was born with bright blond hair. One minute later, her dark-haired brother Rowan Everett Garrity was born weighing 6 lbs, 4 oz. They are both doing fantastic. Mom is recovering well, too. Only a few more weeks in bed, then she can FINALLY move around. We should be able to leave the hospital on Thursday or Friday. Thanks for all your love and support.

Almost there...
Tomorrow morning will be our last day as non-parents and to mark the day we will appropriately be getting up early! We need to be at Logan Regional Hospital for all of the prep work for the c-section at 7am. We were kind of hoping that our doctor would call and tell us that one of the four women who had booked the 09-09-09 date had delivered early so we could take her spot, but the call never came. So instead of having a really cool birthday, our kids will have to be content that they were born on labor day, even though their mom never really experienced labor. I'm ok with that though!
Keegan's parents made a last-minute decision to make the long drive here for Labor Day weekend and we are glad they did. They have to work on Tuesday so they can't stay too long on Monday, but I think they'll have some pretty good reasons to want to stay as long as possible. Good thing the c-section happens at about 9am.
We'll let you all know how it goes!!

Wedding Weekend
This past weekend Keegan and I had permission from my doctor to travel to Portland to see my sister get married. It was so nice to be home! Everything in Oregon was so green and sunshiny! The trip getting their wasn't the smoothest, but I guess throwing up while an airplane is landing isn't the worst someone has gone through to get to the wedding of a loved one. Thankfully, the man we were sitting next to didn't seem to mind at all. He said that he was a school teacher and had driven buses so it was nothing new to him! It made me feel better that he wasn't gagging. One of the few things he did say about it was "Good save!" as Keegan found a bag in the seat pocket in front of us and opened it just in time to catch!
We arrived Thursday night and it was nice to spend time talking with Keegan's parents. Friday was pretty relaxing and again spent over at the Garrity house until we headed over to my house in the afternoon. Keegan and the boys went and played basketball while the girls prepared things for the BBQ and I crocheted. I learned a few new tricks from my cousin Amy who traveled from Texas. She's a pro! I was also able to see all four of my mom's sisters and I just love them! They are so much fun! It was such a nice change of scenery to be out of bed but still bed-ridden. I'm very grateful for comfortable couches and chairs that recline :-)
The BBQ was fun and I even got to meet Seth's "Frrrriennnd" is what he called her. The highlight was when Grandpa Monson asked her if she was "friendly" with Seth. hahaha. Too funny. Keegan made his entrance a little late so he missed a lot of the action and best food, but he was spending time with his Mustang. (The only thing I have over this "baby" is that he won't have it forever!) His younger brother has been driving it lately so he taught him how to change the oil and filter and flushed the radiator fluid. I think that may have been one of the highlights for him. :-)
The next morning we got to sleep in a bit and then made our way to the temple for Karinne's sealing. I sat in the back of the car despite being offered shot-gun and started feeling queasy after only driving for about 15 minutes. Thankfully we made it the other 15 and then sat down in a waiting room chapel. The queasiness progressed and I had to leave to find a bathroom. Keegan's mom followed me in and held my hair back for me this time so that was nice. I'm thinking my body just isn't used to so much motion anymore- so I'd get lightheaded and feel like I was spinning...and then lose it about 20 minutes later. I was glad I got it all out before everything started .... I felt SO much better afterward! And after all of the morning sickness this really wasn't too bad.
The sealing was great and I was feeling like I really would have regretted it if I wasn't there. I've been able to see several sealings but I hadn't seen one of my siblings until then. Temple marriages are incredible and I am so glad I got to see it.
After being escorted through the temple and temple grounds in a wheel chair and taking pictures, we made our way back home to the Garrity's. We ate lunch and then I took a long nap. That was a lot of activity for a bed-ridden girl! I slept about 3 hours! We found out at about 6pm we were supposed to have met at the church for reception pictures at 5...so we hurried and got ready and then took a few more pictures. My family had brought a nice plush red chair for me to sit on during the reception and in between pictures. I felt kind of foolish but have to admit it was nice to be so comfortable there. I was able to see LOTS of old friends from the area and I had a blast. People kept re-filling my food plate and drink and I was once again very well taken care of with great company.
Towards the end of the night the florist (family friend) brought me my assigned project. When Keegan and I got married, Karinne was a couple of days away from having knee surgery from a torn ACL. She wasn't able to help out much and wanted to do something, so her job was to pick off all of the flower petals and put them in little cups. Then people would use to the cups to toss the petals at me and Keegan as we left. Now a few years later this naturally became my job :-) I had lots of helpers including Seth's friend and her mom (who is also a good friend of mine).
We got all of the petals off in time to send Karinne and Dalen off. I didn't see their departure or how tacky their car was decorated, but I heard it all went well. They looked so happy the whole day! I just kept thinking how glad I was that they would be living in Logan and I'd get to see them a lot after they got back from honeymooning. There's not a lot of time to get to chat with the bride right before and on her wedding day... so it was nice that I didn't feel like I wouldn't be able to talk to her afterward.
Keegan took me home shortly after they left and almost all of the decorations were already taken down and the church's "cultural hall" looked like a gym again. :-) There were so many people helping! I said my goodbyes to aunts, cousins and friends and fell asleep shortly after getting home. It was a good day.
Sunday was another relaxing day spent chatting with family which is always nice. We headed out Monday early afternoon. My dad played airport chauffeur for about the 4th time that weekend and even gave up his trip to the zoo with the grand kids to take us. I was again wheeled by Keegan to the gate and this flight it only took me about 45 minutes of flying to lose it. (This time there wasn't anyone sitting next to us though which is good. And we knew right where the barf bag was. :-) I am impressed at how well those things hold fluid!) My aunt met us at the airport with our van and then we were headed back to Logan. We made a slight detour in Brigham so I could pick up all of my personal things from the high school. A lot of the other teachers had done almost everything for me! I had been stressed about it before but everything looked great. We sorted through just a few things, Keegan hauled a few boxes to the car, and that was that. And the end of our trip!

T-t-t-too Much Time on My Hands
Little did I know last summer as I attended a Styx concert and sang along to "Too much Time on My Hands," that this summer would bring me just that. WAY too much time! I think all I was really thinking about having on my hands then was the shaved ice! There's only so much you can do while laying in bed to prepare for a life changing event like brining home two little ones... but I'm trying to make the best of it. Here's what has been occupying the majority of my time:
-Searching for hand-me-down baby gear on Craigslist and KSL (that other people will have to go and pick up!)
-Catching up with The Book of Mormon challenge (our ward challenged us to begin in May and have it read by the end of August)

-Learning how to crochet and making a baby blanket (Yesterday I did this all while watching The Sound of Music -it was great. And today I've had the songs stuck in my head- such a cute show.)
-Making grocery lists w/ more detail so other people can go and buy them for me.
-Mastering the card games I know and learning a few new ones thanks to PySol. My two new found favs are Braid and Picture Gallery. (Warning: If you're addicted to Solitaire stay away from this program! It has hundreds of other card games that are just as addicting!)
-Playing the game FarmTown on Facebook... I have reached the level of "Mighty Farmer." Thats huge. I have planted thousands of crops and harvested them, and I have 8 sheep, 3 chickens, a donkey, a horse, and a dog, plus orchards of various trees. It's pretty fun. Especially now since I've enlisted the help of two of my sisters!
-Catching up on friends' blogs (this actually makes me feel like I'm talking to them... kind of pathetic but really fun!)

-Re-learning how to tie hemp necklaces and learning a few new styles. (Keegan had to chastise me on how unsquare a lot of my square knots looked... but they are much better now!)
-Talking on the phone with family. (I think we'll have to call T-Mobile and ask for some extra minutes this month! oops!)
-Looking up appropriate wedding dance music for my little sisters wedding... there were some funny suggestions on this site.
-Looking up safe "exercises" to do while on bed rest and implementing them a few times/day. I'm glad I have my little hand weights now!
-Talking to the sub over my classes to get updates on how things are going and where to go next. (At first it was REALLY hard to let go of this part of my life... but I have realized that I am much less stressed than before. Most of teaching was eustress, but I have to admit: Now that I am waking up around 9 when 2nd hour is just starting, it is so nice! I really miss it, but for the most part I am just grateful that I still get a full months check w/ only working about 4 days in May. Couldn't have done that with too many other jobs.)
-Reading pregnancy and parenting books that family and friends have let me borrow. I'm most likely not going to be able to attend the hospitals classes on birthing etc, so I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible with these and the help of credible websites.
-Talking to Carma my 80-year-old cleaning lady. :-D Possibly one of my favorite people, Carma is our sergeant grandma that is atypical of most grandmas. This apartment looks a million times better than it did when we moved in! As Keegan puts it, "She cleans things I didn't even know were dirty! But every time she comes back with a dirty rag." She was one of the first to find out I was in the hospital and immediately wanted to do all she could to help. So she told me she'd come and clean the house and "shine me up," and that she did!
She still owns and operates her own cleaning business (in-between working at the temple most days) and is incredible! I just love her and she is so fun to talk to. So far she's done the typical cleaning chores but has also done some big ones! She took the doors off of our shower and scraped off all of the nasty molded caulking. After hauling those away she put in new caulking and that tub has never looked so good! She also refinished all of the cabinets. We'd be out a small fortune if she'd let us pay her. But she is always so happy to come over and that is what makes it so wonderful. She's served 5 missions for the LDS church; the lady understands service. We love Carma! I definitely feel an increase in my sense of sanity when everything
is nice and clean (especially when I don't have to do it!)
-Watching episodes of "Psych" and "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" w/ Keegan and "The Office" w/ Karinne and Dalen. Lately these are our favorite shows. Thank you Hulu and Joe!
It's been 2 weeks so far... I feel really blessed to have so many good people around taking such good care of us. Keegan has been great and is expanding his culinary skills. Thankfully he is able to stay at home most of the day while working and then go in to the office for the last few hours.
In the weeks ahead I'm planning to do a lot more of the above and finish at least two baby blankets while watching all of the movies people have let us borrow!
Did I manage to convince anyone how great bed-rest is? ;-) No? ....good!

I definitely feel an increase in my sense of sanity when everything
is nice and clean (especially when I don't have to do it!)-Watching episodes of "Psych" and "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" w/ Keegan and "The Office" w/ Karinne and Dalen.
Did I manage to convince anyone how great bed-rest is? ;-) No? ....good!

Baby Mama Drama
This weekend we will be celebrating our anniversary in a room with WiFi, cable TV, shower, and reclining bed. Unfortunately, the bed is not big enough for the two of us. Today we checked into our honeymoon suite, room 3 of St. Mark's hospital in Salt Lake City :-/
Yesterday at our 20 week check up we found out were having a boy! AND a girl! which was good news, but that bad news is Martha was diagnosed with an "incompetent cervix" (more common with multiple births) and reccomended for surgery. Our doctor suggested we get a second opinion from a Perinatologist, so today we took work off to go down to Ogden Regional for an appointment. The specialist there confirmed our Logan doctor's recommendation, and sent us to St. Mark's in Salt Lake where it looks like we will spend the weekend. Sometime tommorrow, Martha will undergo a cervical cerclage procedure. After the surgery, they want to keep her here for a couple more days until things are under control. Unfortunately, we didn't prepare for a weekend stay, so we came only with the clothes on our back. We also didn't bring our cell phone chargers, so if you need to get a hold of us you might have to dial Room 3: 801-743-6772. Room 232: 801-743-6741
In general, the surgery is relatively low risk, but there is still a chance the amniotic sac (water) could break, causing premature labor. There is also a chance the surgery could cause an infection which could also lead to early labor. We are hoping for the best and appreciate those who keep us in their prayers. We'll keep you updated as things develop.
Update #1: It's now Friday at about 3:00, the surgery went well; now we are just waiting until everything is stable enough for us to return home. It will probably be sometime on Sunday. Wow, I had no idea how boring being confined to a hospital could be.
Update #2: Friday 7:00pm - Martha's friend Janet payed us a visit and brought a bag of cell phone chargers. We found a donor for Martha's phone, so feel free to give her a call, I'm sure she'd love to hear from ya.
Update #3: Saturday 4:00pm - I was going crazy cooped up here so I drove back to Logan late last night. We now have our chargers, clean clothes, reading material, etc. to make our stay more pleasant. They will probably release Martha sometime Monday morning and then she will be on bed rest for two weeks maybe longer.

Nachos and Ultrasounds Don't Mix
April Fool's Day was our next appointment with the ultrasound tech. We both took a half day off work and by the time I got through the canyon to pick Keegan up, I hunger was setting in. Taco Bell met my fast, easy, and cheap requirements so we headed there. As quickly as I decided where to eat I knew what to eat: NACHOS. Although I just made myself nachos the other day, when it comes to this delicacy, it's very sad to say that fake cheese is just SO much better.First off, having a very hungry pregnant lady in a rush to get to a Dr.'s appointment isn't normally the best scenario. Combine that with a line of five cars in a fast food drive-through that advances one car every 3.3 minutes for a total of about 16½ minutes...emotions start running high and needless to say I was not happy.
I stole a couple of bites from Keegan's meal each time we were waiting in traffic (I was driving), and we eventually came to a red light where I could bust open my most recent craving. The plastic was pretty intense; as soon as I began I thought "This is a bad idea." But I pushed forward and when I finally got the stupid plastic thing off, my whole arm slipped with the impact, and my sweater sleeve took off a bunch of the cheese and sour cream. Gross. The light turned green so I handed it over to Keegan–or at least thought I did because as soon as I felt the pressure release, I dropped it... and then ⅔ of my precious nachos spilled on the floor and everywhere in the van. It was sad. We got to the doctor's and I scarfed down as much as I could for a couple seconds, took off my cheesy sweater, and went to check in. (We were late of course.)
Everything with the ultrasound and following appointment to see our doctor went well. However, as of right now we're not 100% sure what we're having. They were pretty squirmy and modest little things! They kept crossing their legs and putting their hands down just at the right times. It was kind of funny. My next ultra sound is on May 6th (our anniversary) and we should find out for sure by then. I'll be about 20 weeks or so.
For those of you who are wondering about why we haven't posted any sonogram pics yet, refer to #6 of this former post.
Side note: After the ultra sound we had to wait about an hour for my doctor to get back from the hospital which is right next door. I just kept thinking... I could have eaten all of the nachos in the world by now. Keegan did a great job of cleaning the car up which was really nice of him and surprisingly I don't smell nachos everytime I get in the car. But I did find a tortilla chip in my purse the next day. haha. Aparently it was a sign that we'll both be cleaning up a lot of messes soon!
